Word keep stopping me from opening downloaded files

On the Go menu, click Home. Locate the file that is named com. If the problem still occurs, exit Word, and then restore the com. Open Application Support , and then open Microsoft. Open Office , and then open User Templates. Locate the file that is named Normal , and move the file to the desktop. If the problem seems to be resolved, you can move the Normal file to the trash.

Try to open the file in Safe mode. For the steps to do this, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:. How to use a "clean startup" to determine whether background programs are interfering with Office for Mac. If you are using third-party fonts, Word for Mac might experience problems with the font that you have installed. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:.

Note The document may have to be accessed on a PC. The document may also require that you replace the PC font by using a font that is more suitable for the Mac, such as Arial or Verdana. If all these steps fail, the document is probably corrupted beyond recovery. At this point, you might have to look for a backup of the document, or re-create the document.

To do this, follow these steps: On the Go menu, click Home. Open Documents. And, of course, only turn it off to download files you know to be safe. In Windows Defender, you can also change Edge's SmartScreen to merely warn you when you are about to download a file it deems suspicious instead of it outright blocking it. You'll be able to click through the warning and override SmartScreen's concerns and download the file. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic.

There are several factors to consider. You might consider calling your IT help desk right away. But, what information will they need from you? Do you know the exact steps you took? If Word keeps crashing, you may find that an add-in can be the culprit.

If an add-in is the issue, start your application in safe mode by holding the CTRL key down while you click on the application. If you see add-ins, start the application normally and disable add-ins one by one. You will want to restart the application after disabling each add-in to see if that helps.

To get to the add-ins, click on the File tab, go to Options and then Add-ins on the left. Click Go and uncheck an add-in in the list, if there are any checked. That will disable an add-in. Follow this Microsoft Office tech support link for those instructions.

If you did save at some point before Word crashed and have saved it on a drive, you could probably recover at least the portion of the document through the last time you had hit save. If it was saved at any point on a hard drive or USB drive, you could also do a search for it. To do this, right-click on the Policies key, click New , click Key. This will create a new key, which you should then name "Attachments". If you find that the Attachments key is already present, you can skip to the next step.

Name it "SaveZoneInformation" and click Enter. Finally, to disable the Attachment Manager in Windows 10, double-click on the newly-created SaveZoneInformation value and change its value data to 1. Click OK to finish. When you complete these steps, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to apply the changes.

From here onward, any file you download will no longer attach Zone Information to the file's alternate data stream. This will allow you to open your files without any difficulties. From here, on the right-side, double-click on the SaveZoneInformation value and change its value data to 3. If you're using a Windows 10 edition that has the Local Group Policy Editor, you can configure the Attachment Manager using the steps indicated here.
